The ADB–Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) strengthens human resource development, giving qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries opportunities to pursue graduate studies in economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at selected educational institutions in the Asia and Pacific region. The program is open to nationals of an ADB borrowing member country who have gained admission to an approved master’s program at a designated institution.
In 2024, the JSP partnered with one of its designated institutions, the United Nations University (UNU), the only UN organization headquartered in Asia, for the conference held from 31 July to 1 August at UNU in Tokyo. Under the UNU system is the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, a research and educational institute dedicated to realizing a sustainable future for people and our planet from the point of sustainability science.
This is the first collaboration with an ADB–JSP-designated institution to broaden and elevate the academic exchange for its scholars and alumni, tapping our partner university’s expertise and network. The cooperation with UNU brought fresh insights into knowledge for sustainable development, tapping their expertise and network of prominent and credible academicians and development experts. The hybrid conference, inaugurated by ADB Vice-President for Sectors and Themes Fatima Yasmin and attended by various dignitaries, attracted over 300 participants.
Armi Shyr Anastacio Baticados from the Philippines completed her master’s in development management from the Asian Institute of Management. Since then, she has founded a milk bank and was selected as a participant in leadership programs of the East-West Center and the United Nations.
Since finishing his master’s and doctoral studies in Architecture and Building Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Shital Babu Acharya of Nepal won several architecture design competitions, and helped enhance health infrastructure in South Asian countries and improve Nepalese schools.

Over the past 35 years, the scholarship program has awarded more than 4,300 scholarships, with 40% granted to female students. In 2023 alone, 108 scholarships were awarded.
